Well it has been a rough weekend to say the least! On Friday night the boys spent the night with the grandparents because we had to get up at 5 saturday morning and drive downtown to a college for me to take the Praxis (Spanish test to renew my teaching cert.). By the time we got home Eli had vomited multiple times and his BS was in the 400's which is really high. After several attempts to correct it we decided to change his pump site. Sure enough the canula inside his body had broken in half so he had not been getting insulin for several hours. What we thought was a stomach virus was actually DKA or Ketoacidosis. For those of you who do not know about Diabetes that means acid levels in his body were very high and were spilling into his bloodstream. If untreated this can cause coma and even death in some cases. His face was turning a gray color, he was breathing heavily and had dark circles under his eyes. We ended up at Children's Hospital and sure enough he was in DKA. They ended up admitting us overnight to a Special care unit where the parent does not usually get to stay with the child but thankfully they let me stay with him. I got "sleep" (I got about 1 hour total) in a plastic chair next to his bed. Needless to say it was not a fun time although his nurses at Children's were great. During the night Eli's bloodwork got better and better and they gave him lots of fluids.
We finally got to come home with a much better Eli around 1pm today.
All of that to say we decided to give Aubrey & Eli their birthday gift early. We were supposed to go to our local amusement park today after church with some good friends of ours but we had to cancel so the boys were bummed. We got them a Wii for their birthday which they have been wanting for a long time. Their party is next weekend but we went ahead and gave them their gifts from us today. They were so excited to have it and we spent the afternoon and evening learning how to use it.
We are very thankful that Eli made it through this ok. It could have been much worse. Please keep another family in your prayers that we met at the hospital. They have an 18 month old son Josiah who pulled a TV on top of himself and crushed his skull. They were told he probably would not make it but he is doing well considering and has already been through one brain surgery and faces another soon. They have 3 other very young children at home so they all need our prayers!
